📞 Overheard in a Girlie Group Chat

Our next live show is coming up, and unlike this season of Love Island, we promise real chats and emotionally available conversations (though chances are we will probably end up talking about Love Island). Grab your ticket and join us on 7/31 at Seaboard Southend.
💬 What We’re Chatting About:
Carol: I’ve never been a big Belieber, but I’ll take “Daisies” from Justin’s new SWAG album on repeat, straight into my veins, for the rest of the summer. I haven’t followed the Bieber drama too closely beyond people worrying and wondering if Hailey sold Rhode to bail him out. But now that the album is out, I can’t help but wonder… was it all just a perfectly timed ruse or is there some truth in the chaos?
The new Instagram font. I hate it so much, but everyone is using it. Is this some algorithm hack I missed? Do you get more reach if you adopt it immediately? Instagram hasn’t even offered it to me (got it, not an influencer), so maybe this all says more about me than anything else. But everyone’s posts now feel like they’re cosplaying as a Blink-182 album cover. Does everyone actually like it but me?? No seriously, tell me.

Editors note: I do see that this font is a collab with a very cool Spanish singer. No hate to you Rosalia, but your handwriting stresses me out.
Skylar: Clueless is turning 30 (I’m fine… As if!), which feels impossible because I, someone who has been watching this movie my whole life, am clearly just a girl in her undetermined age bracket (but hopefully still passing for late 20s). Honestly, I’m deeply jealous of the literal toy takeover happening right now. Mattel is launching Barbie, Polly Pocket, and even American Girl Doll editions inspired by the film — aka every childhood fantasy mashed into one giant Cher Horowitz fever dream. Honestly, just take my money. I would have killed to dress up my Samantha doll in Cher’s iconic plaid perfection?? If you need me, I’ll be rewatching the movie and trying to untangle the knots in my doll’s hair — the same knots I gave her by brushing it once, like a fool. 💻💋🛍️

The Love Island USA Season 7 finale is tonight and yes, I’ve watched every episode... and yet? This season has been weird. Like, no one actually found love, Casa Amour was a let down, no movie night, and there’s a lot to unpack — from the contestants’ allergy to closing off to how production handled (or didn’t handle) some very problematic social media backlash and contestant behavior. Justice for Amaya who (imo) carried the show, because the men were giving ✨unemployed situationship✨ energy. I will be watching the finale, but mostly out of obligation — not optimism.
👑 Meme Queen of Lake Norman
This week the spotlight is on Mamie Lee — the hilarious, girl’s girl woman behind LKNMemes, Lake Norman Woman Magazine, and Good Morning LKN. She's the kind of person who will hype you up, tell you where to get the best smoothies and sundresses, and remind you that social media should actually be... fun?
“I don’t chase likes and views — it’s more fun to put things out that are relatable and make me smile.”

Mamie gets real about starting over, building community, and what she’d tell her younger self (hint: do it sooner). Her top advice for aspiring influencers?
“Be authentic — and remember that social media is SOCIAL. Like, comment, share, and mean it.”

✈️ Spirit Spiral
Normally, I think Spirit Airline jokes are just exaggerated internet lore. But after a recently hellacious travel experience, I can’t help but wonder: how do they do it?
I was flying United from Charlotte to Newark for an international connection. We boarded on time, then… we sat. And sat. Eventually, we taxied back to the gate and deplaned, helplessly watching the minutes, and any hope of making our connection, slip away with every delayed announcement. Gate after gate around us made the same calls: weather across the East Coast was shutting everything down.
Every gate and every airline… except Spirit. They never canceled. They never even delayed. AND THEY WERE ALSO GOING TO NEWARK. HOW?? I couldn’t decide if I was impressed or horrified.
United was giving pure hostage negotiation energy, promising updates every 15 minutes that always turned into… another promise of an update in 15 minutes. Next door, Spirit was basically throwing a rave. They hawked $17 exit row upgrades like half-off tequila shots, blasted announcements at 1 a.m. volume, and seemed moments away from launching a foam party on the jet bridge. One guy, Jason, was running the whole show solo, answering questions, pushing upgrades, providing timely updates. At one point I genuinely considered that Jason might also be the pilot.
Meanwhile, I stood in a non-moving gate agent line while on the phone with United for five hours, feeding them rebooking options like I worked there. Less than 10 feet away, Spirit was efficiently boarding their totally unaffected flight. Seriously… will they put their planes in the air no matter the risk, or do they have some hack we’re all ignoring because we’ve been told they can’t be trusted?
I hoped my research would lead to answers, but I was left with nothing but a wide range of extremes.
Spirit famously became the first U.S. airline to charge for carry-on bags in 2010. Since then, it has swung wildly between success and disaster: Spirit was named Morgan Stanley’s top growth airline pick in 2014, ranked second in on-time performance in 2017 (just behind Delta), but also topping passenger complaint charts in 2013 and 2015. After stranding passengers in 2021 and the infamous “emotional support hamster” incident in 2018, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 in late 2024 and re-emerged in 2025 with a new CEO. So, maybe I just caught them on a post-bankruptcy high?
Either way, they were the undisputed winners of my travel day from hell.
United eventually “rebooked” me on Lufthansa, except when I tried to check a bag (a full 28 hours later), I learned my boarding pass was connected to absolutely nothing. No seat. No flight. Just bad vibes in the void. United had canceled every flight, including my return, and then had the audacity to ask ME, “How did you get this boarding pass?” as if I printed it in my basement. Jason would never. Jason would’ve had me in Newark a day ago.
Anyway, maybe consider Spirit for your next booking. Or maybe I’m just mad at United. This isn’t a paid ad for Spirit (it’s not in their budget).

👯♀️ Fun fact from the trenches
We have committed to publishing this newsletter every Sunday at 6pm EST. Despite the fact your amazing feedback told us… it doesn’t matter. If you haven’t given us feedback yet - you still can, here. Anyway, this week, Carol is in Sweden, Skylar is in Sonoma. Which means we have optimized girlmath to figure out when to publish. Carol has been counting backwards by 9 hours for what feels like 12 hours straight and Skylar has confidently counted forward by 3 hours for 4 days… and still has no idea what time it is where Carol is. Cheers to girl(time) and avoiding looking at the world clock.

Spoiler alert - Skylar did not send that draft for another 1.5 hours.
